About one-fourth of children and more than half of adolescents will develop cavities in their permanent teeth, making dental caries (cavities) one of the most common chronic diseases in children and young adults.
According to the CDC, pit and fissure sealant procedures can significantly reduce the risk of cavities on molars in the first year after placement and over several years. This is why professional health organizations advocate for the wide use of dental sealants as a basic preventative measure against cavities and recommend that children receive sealant procedures as soon as they get their adult teeth.
Getting certified in pit and fissure sealant procedures is crucial to ensuring your practice offers effective preventative services to your patients. Pit and fissure sealants create a physical barrier that prevents bacteria and food particles from accumulating in the deep grooves and folds of the molars, reducing the risk of cavities and caries. During a pit and fissure sealing, dentists or registered dental assistants thoroughly clean each tooth and apply a solution to the surface of the teeth. Once the solution has dried, they then apply a liquid sealant and allow it to set, typically by shining a UV light onto the sealant. Each procedure takes only a few minutes per tooth and is completely pain-free for patients.
Our Pit and Fissure Sealant Course is designed to provide hands-on training to help registered dental assistants in Kingsburg master these techniques.
