What Is Coronal Polishing?

Coronal polishing, sometimes referred to as prophylactic or dental polishing, is a technique where dental assistants use a rubber prophylaxis cup or brush and special polishing paste to carefully polish teeth, removing stains and plaque while creating a smooth tooth surface.

While coronal polishing removes some stains and plaque, it is not considered dental prophylaxis, as polishing does not remove calculus from the teeth. This is why dental assistants perform coronal polishing after dental prophylaxis.

Coronal polishing also enhances fluoride absorption and prepares teeth for various dental procedures, including sealants, dental dams, orthodontic bands and brackets, crowns, and bridges.

Who Can Perform Coronal Polishing?

Apart from dentists and dental hygienists, now from January 2025, the California Dental Board allows ALL dental assistants to perform coronal polishing once they have received certification. This certification ensures that dental assistants understand the contraindications of coronal polishing, such as certain respiratory or infectious diseases, periodontitis, and gingivitis, among other conditions.

About Our Coronal Polishing Course

The Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting’s prophylactic polishing course is approved by the Dental Board of California to train and certify registered dental assistants in this procedure.

Our coronal polishing board-approved course is a 12-hour course, consisting of 8 hours in the office and 4 hours of home study. The course is offered Monday through Thursday.

To successfully pass the course, candidates must complete the following assignments:

• Perform coronal polishing on three different patients
• Pass a written test (the minimum passing grade being 75 percent)

Students are required to wear proper PPE at all times. Please note that students must bring their own patients, as the school does not provide them. Patients must meet the following criteria:

• Must be 18 years or older
• Must complete a health and dental history form
• Must be punctual and understanding, recognizing that they are part of the learning process and the students are being graded
