What are the 12 steps of sealant placement?

If you are training to become a dental assistant, one of the most important skills you will learn is how to assist with sealant placement. Dental sealants play a huge role in preventing cavities, especially on the chewing surfaces of molars, where grooves and pits make teeth more vulnerable.

Sealants create a protective barrier that blocks out food particles and bacteria before decay can begin. At Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting, you will learn how to support your dental team confidently through every step of this procedure. So, what are the 12 steps of sealant placement?

Preparation

Before anything else, you should review the patient’s medical and dental history to make sure sealants are safe and appropriate. Be sure to check for any allergies, medications, or recent treatments that could affect care.

You will then work alongside your provider to identify which teeth need sealants. This is typically molars with deep grooves, since they are most likely to trap bacteria and develop decay.

Application

There are several steps to proper sealant placement.

Rinse

To start the process, you clean the tooth thoroughly using a prophy brush and pumice. This removes plaque, food debris, and anything else that could interfere with the sealant’s bond.

Dry

After all the pumice is rinsed away, the tooth should be dried completely using air from the dental unit. Sealants will not stick properly unless the surface is completely clean and dry.

Isolate the Tooth

Moisture is your enemy. You will use cotton rolls, gauze, or a dental dam to keep saliva from contaminating the area while you work.

Etch the Enamel

Now it is time to etch. You will apply an etching solution to the tooth’s surface to roughen the enamel just enough to help the sealant grip. This step is quick but critical.

Rinse and Dry Again

Once the etching is complete (usually after 15 to 60 seconds), you will rinse thoroughly and dry the area again. The etched enamel should look frosty, which is how you know it is ready.

Apply the Sealant

Using a small applicator or brush, you will carefully apply the sealant material to the etched areas. Take your time to avoid air bubbles or overfilling.

Cure the Sealant

You will use a curing light to harden the sealant. This step usually takes about 20–30 seconds, depending on the product’s instructions. Once cured, the material becomes strong and durable.

Evaluate the Sealant

Check for complete coverage and make sure there are no gaps or bubbles. A good sealant application is smooth, even, and fully sealed.

Check the Bite

The patient then bites down on articulating paper to test the occlusion. If the sealant is too high, adjustments may be needed to ensure a comfortable bite.

It is crucial that you follow each of these steps carefully to ensure optimal results.

Post-Care

Finally, you will give your patient instructions for protecting their new sealants. Remind them to avoid sticky or chewy foods for a little while and to keep up with their brushing and flossing routine.
