What Is Required To Be a Dental Assistant in California?

Are you looking for a career that is fast, hands-on, and makes a real difference? Becoming a dental assistant in California could be your next step. You could work closely with patients, join a professional healthcare team, and enjoy job stability without spending years (and thousands of dollars) on a traditional degree.

At Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting, we answer your questions and make it easy to get started. From your first day in class to your first day on the job, our highly qualified staff are here to support your journey. In just a few months, you could be fully trained and workforce-ready. Here is how to get there.

Education and Training

Dental assisting does not require a four-year degree in California. All you need is a state-approved program, such as the one we offer at Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting. In just 10 to 12 weeks, you will gain the hands-on skills and clinical know-how dental offices are looking for.

You will train in everything from dental anatomy and X-rays to sterilization, patient care, and front-office tasks. Our experienced instructors bring real-world insight to every lesson, so you are not just learning—you are getting job-ready.

Choose Your Path: Entry-Level or RDA

In California, there are two ways to begin your dental assisting career.

Unlicensed Dental Assistant

As an unlicensed dental assistant, you can start working immediately. However, when you take this path, the state requires that within your first year, you complete CPR training, an 8-hour infection control course, and a course on California dental law.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

Becoming an RDA allows you to perform advanced duties, and the role typically comes with higher pay. To earn this title, you will need to pass the state exams and meet a few extra requirements.

At Kingsburg School of Dental Assisting, we could guide you through every stage of the process.

How Do You Become an RDA?

There are several steps you need to take when you are ready to become an RDA in California, including:

  • Graduate from a board-approved dental assisting program
  • Earn your CPR certification
  • Pass the RDA written and practical exams
  • Complete fingerprinting and a background check

It is our job to guide you through these requirements. Many of our graduates go on to exciting roles in general dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric care, or oral surgery.
